Spring and summer are prime times to undergo general renovation work. However, what tradespeople might not know is that it’s also the prime time for many animals to locate the best nesting spots, particularly in rural areas.
“Did you know that blocking access to places of shelter for a hazel dormice could result in a fine of up to £5,000 or prison sentence of up to 6 months?”
“Were you aware that all bat species, their breeding sites and resting places are fully protected by law because they are a European protected species?”
“What about that under Schedule 9 of the WCA, it is illegal to release a grey squirrel into the wild, or allow one to escape?”
It’s so easy to get caught on the wrong side of the law when it comes to nesting animals and whilst we know that the majority of tradespeople have no interest in deliberately disturbing animals, it’s not always that simple. The principal of “Ignorantia juris non excusat” (or “ignorance of the law is no excuse” as it translates in English) is in operation which means that regardless of whether a tradesperson is aware of the law they are breaking they can still be found guilty.
